What You Will Do

Research and Write an Article

Interns will have the opportunity to research, write, and publish an original article on a climate-related topic. This could range from evaluating carbon offsets as a climate solution to exploring how climate change influences human migration.

Support Newsletters and Social Media

You will assist in researching and writing Carbon Brief’s award-winning newsletters, as well as create and promote content for social media platforms like Twitter/X and Instagram. This includes developing visuals to accompany your article.

Contribute to Editorial Decisions

By helping to identify stories in scientific papers and policy documents, you’ll play a role in shaping how Carbon Brief covers the latest climate developments.

What You Will Learn

Real-World Journalism Experience

Interns will observe how a small, independent global journalism team operates day-to-day, from brainstorming story ideas to final publication. You’ll see the step-by-step process of assembling articles and learn how to critically evaluate news, data, and reports.

Visual Storytelling Skills

A key focus is mastering the use of visuals—such as charts, infographics, and videos—to enhance your journalism and engage readers.

Your Skills and Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Interest in climate change: A genuine curiosity about climate science and policy.
  • Writing experience: Some experience explaining technical topics for a general audience (e.g., blog posts, student publications, or self-published pieces).
  • Commitment to journalistic integrity: A strong sense of ethics and accuracy.
  • Technical proficiency: Competence in word processing and spreadsheet software such as MS Word, Excel, Google Docs, or Sheets.
  • Excellent English: Spoken and written communication skills.

Desirable Skills

  • Social media experience: Familiarity with Twitter/X and Instagram is a plus.

Internship Details

Location and Schedule

The internship follows a hybrid format. Interns will spend time at Carbon Brief’s offices near London Bridge station and work remotely. Office hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday, with a one-hour lunch break.

Compensation
